Of all the places I have been in the world, I would say Paris is my favorite. It's hard to describe my love for Paris and why I would rather go there again than to somewhere I've never been before. But here's a shot at it...
The first time I went to Paris was in 2007. It was a high school trip and I was just about to graduate. I've taken French since the 8th grade and was interested in the motherland of the language. Before, I only imagined Paris by its stereotype - Eiffel Tower, mimes and poodles. But when I got to Paris, I didn't see a single mime or a poodle.
Instead, I was exposed to a city of rich history, a flair of romance, and amazing architecture everywhere. It was inspiring. The way Parisians lived their lives. The streets crowded with cars ranging from beat downs to Vespas to Lamborghinis.
Parisians are said to be snobby and rude but I found if you try to speak a little French, they will be happy to send you the right way. It's rude to assume they speak English. It's as if a tourist came to your country and started speaking a foreign language (which happens at work believe it or not.) But I admire their lifestyle. The way they carry themselves from their busy routines and the way they are so proud of their city. And most importantly, their style. Parisians are notorious for their fashion, and even the homeless can put together a decent outfit. In terms of visuals, it's extremely important to present yourself in a flattering way - something us Canadians seem to forget.
Paris is filled with history, and I love the way the old is mixed in with the new. Everything has a history and has its own "image." From the traditional Haussmann architecture to the gilded woodwork, walking down Paris, it's impossible not to draw inspiration from anything.
I visited Paris again in 2009 and again in 2010. Each time I go, it's as if I know the city a bit better. It's like visiting an old friend and learning something new each day I spend with her. Paris is definitely a place everybody needs to visit in their lifetime. The food, the shopping, the art and culture and my favorite - the history. Paris has something to offer for everyone.
